The title Autumn Variations draws direct inspiration from the English composer Edward Elgar’s 1899 orchestral work, Enigma Variations . In Elgar’s piece, each variation was a musical sketch of one of his friends. Similarly, Sheeran conceived this album as a series of musical portraits reflecting the experiences of his close friends and family during the autumn season.
